Oh I love your sofa! In the days when I had a garden we planted potatoes and it was so wonderful to dig them up and eat them (even boring Italian potatoes) and they are incredibly tenacious - even after the kitchen garden was turned into lawn they kept popping up! Could you put some kind of wire cloche? And sorry about the rest, sometimes life is just overwhelming.
